This project was a fairly simple one. I took a
Bandai master grade RX-78-2 Gundam ver. Ka model kit and converted
it to an RX-78-1 Prototype Gundam ver. Ka. When I originally bought
the Gundam ver. Ka master grade kit, I had planned to build it as
an RX-78-2 Gundam as sort of an homage to the original Gundam. But
then Bandai when ahead and came out with the RX-78-2 Gundam OYW
version, which of course I bought. So now that kit will be my homage
to the original Gundam.
Anyway, back to the kit at hand. There were only
three modifications I needed to do to convert this kit to an RX-78-1
Prototype Gundam. First I needed to modify the forearms, second
was the ankle guards, and last was the right-side skirt armor. You
can see how I did this by clicking on the links below.
There were a couple of other modifications I did
to this kit to get the look I wanted. One modification was the right
hand. I needed to angle it a little bit more to get the mid-swing
motions I wanted, so I added a piece of styrene to it to get the
length I needed. The last modification was to the mace weapon. Instead
of using the plastic chain that came with the kit, I went with a
cable look for two reasons. The first reason was because it would
be easy to pose, and two, Gundam takes place in the future; who
uses chains anymore?
For the paint, I used two different types on this
kit. For the internals, joints, and thrusters I used Alclad Lacquers.
I used Alclad's Magnesium mixed with a little of their black prime
to paint the internals and joints. The outside of the thrusters
were painted with Duraluminum and the inside was sprayed with Jet
Exhaust. The rest of the kit was painted with Tamiya Acrylics and
then flat coated with a mixture of Future and Tamiya Flat.
I used a combination of decals on this kit. All
the warning labels were from Bandai's master grade RX-78-2 Gundam
ver. Ka set, and the identification markings came from Michael Fichtenmayer's
G3 decals. He just converted them to work with the RX-78-1 theme.
Then I had Phil Goodwin print them out for me. You can check out
